I have said my word for 2012 is BELIEVE and a friend added JUST DO IT (thank you Jeri) so with these two mantras in mind I have made my first nursery quilt FOR SALE. I have been making quilts for some 25 years for myself, for family and friends. My home is full of quilts. I have them folded and piled and thrown over sofas and on beds and chairs. Then there are the tops that remain un-quilted. If you read my blog regularly you will know I have many more on the go in various stages. It seemed to me one day last year that maybe I have enough - why was I making more when I had so many already.What will happen to them all. It occurred to me that it's the proccess I enjoy not necessarily owning the finished product. I rarely make a quilt for a practical purpose - in fact I get slightly annoyed when asked "what are you going to do with it?" The perfect solution is to make quilts for others. I get to play with fabrics, make more quilts but give them a loving new home. I am sure I will still make the odd one just because !! I have a huge eclectic stash of fabrics and so my quilts will reflect this - a slightly vintage perhaps retro feel to them mixed with fresh new fabrics and designs. This is a very simplified way of sewing for me but I loved it - very freeing somehow. Still have to choose the backing and binding and choose a quilting design. I will be using organic wool batting.

I had a quilt top..... now I have blocks and a loose border again. Not sure yet what was wrong but something went awry between the grand idea and the finished article. Back to the machine. I should have learnt by now I am a very visual being and I have to see it first. Never really works otherwise. Could it be the apple fabric or maybe I can't deal with the unbalanced diagonals or is it the taupe ???

Here is a UFO can't remember when I did this one. I think it is from a pattern in P&Q magazine (Aus) from a few years ago. I know I made it from some 30's fabrics and some reds from a stash given to me. I almost never use red but this called to me as a picnic quilt. It has been quilted and sitting awaiting binding for a long time. I went away from the predictable red as binding and put a cute green with summer strawberries. I may add some buttons in the same green.

The tree is down and the fireworks over and so back to quilting ahhhhh ! This is what I'm working on - a simple one with no pattern really just a lot of moving around and un-picking . Even though its easy the apples are directional- of course I sewed some up the wrong way!! It's for a couch so not too big, this is what I have so far. Still figuring out the borders. The fabrics are mostly from Lily & Will with cute apples thrown in. I need to finish this before I start the parade of BOMs I have lined up.

I'm thinking 4 1/2" bars around the border next

I celebrated the last day of 2011 with a beautiful yoga session on Mt. Martha beach. It was a stunning morning, the sunshine hot and sparkling over the water. I guess there were a hundred or so women there. My dear friend, girls from my class, local girls I see about and holiday makers I have never met. What energy and inspiration we rang out. After a busy year it was just beautiful to take that time and just be present in my own thoughts, part of a circle of love and friendship but also going within alone and at peace. I closed 2011 with my friends of Pride and Prejudice. My intention and goal for 2012 is to do something more with my love of sewing I'm not sure what form it will take perhaps on line, perhaps a market or maybe a little business. There now I have penned it it will be. My goals for last year are long forgotten but I intend to learn to draw, cook more, plant my veggies, walk and do yoga more consistently and to be happy and peaceful within EVERYDAY. My word for 2012 is BELIEVE......

CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL

Here are a few shots of my favourite decos this year. Tiny silver birds with a white feather tail, christmas tree with drop crystal and gorgeous big crystal. The little blue birds I made from Wendy's 12 Days of Christmas giveaways. I made some apricot balls and choc hazelnut ones as eggs and sat the little birds on top for some friends. (Zac made the choc ones)

I love these tiny crystal bird name tag holders too. As you all know we are mad keen on animals around here and little birds got the center stage this year. We have some baby birds out back as well I will add some pics later.

Hope you all had a happy Christmas day filled with love of family, good friends, good food and wine.

This year I chose a white Christmas tree and trimmed it with vintage balls in aqua, cream, and bronze with a touch of red. The tiny shell tree was a gift from a dear friend in Tasmania, we have been friends since school - thats a long, long time. She was here a couple of years ago and we bought each other this little tree to remember our friendship at Christmas, don't know if she popped hers out but I sure did. The most important part of Christmas celebration is always breakfast for us. I always bake a whole ham and squeeze fresh orange juice as did my Mum and my Grandmother and prob hers before that. We set a formal table with silverware and crystal I light some special candles for my Nan & Pop and now for my Mum & Dad. This year I added some scrambled eggs and bacon to the menu. I really liked my simple tape with vintage balls attatched strung from a tree outdoors at lunch. I poached a turkey and a chicken in white wine,lemon and thyme plus a tray of roasted veggies plus my much loved and essential gravy.

Now foundation piecing and I have never been on friendly terms. My last attempt, some years ago was a butterfly block which was part of a sampler friendship quilt. Well that block never made it into my quilt it became a pin cushion. Until now I have steered well away from this technique. Then I saw this blog somewhere out there for a quilt based on the Hobbit - we are big Lord of the Rings fans around here and I thought I'd like to give it a try. I downloaded the first block and to my dismay it was foundation pieced. I decided to give it a go without much confidence but I did succeed and so here is block 1 - Gandalf. It really went together quite easily inspite of the tiny bits. I have block 2, it has the most ridiculous number of the tiniest pieces so we shall see if this is beginners luck or whether I have evolved. I am using some batiks which I have had forever and never really work with. I'm pretty pleased so far but perhaps Gandalf will become a cushion we shall see!!

Garden Party

Hello and Welcome to my blog. This is my entry into the Blogger's Quilt Festival for 2011. It is called Garden Party from Material Obsession- here in Australia. I made it to show at my local groups' exhibition recently. The quilt was lots of fun to make - beginning with the background sky moving down through to the earth. After piecing the background I made up lots of dresdens using a wedge ruler. I completed the quilt first - bound and quilted it in an all over design on our longarm machine. Then I appliqued the dresden flowers. Back onto the longarm to custom quilt all the petals. I love the bright happy feel of this quilt and hope you enjoy seeing it. Thank you to Amy for hosting this event. I think this is my 3rd time entering. It is fantastic to be able to see so many wonderful, creative works.

This week I'm working on two projects first I have been waiting to find the right green to start Modern Love from Material Obsession - bought at Craft Expo a year ago. I decided not to use green after all but pink so I've continued cutting strips, just have the dresdens to work out now. The fabrics are mostly Amy Butler 'Love' with a few from my ample stash.

Also have cut out this gorgeous fabric called Sophie by Moda I ordered a layer cake,two jelly rolls and a couple of meters for borders. I had a pattern saved in the Moda Bake Shop - Peppermint Snowballs by Corey Yoder, just perfect. I have cut and marked it all and sewn two blocks so far.

I only need the layer cake for this one plus the white background. I have a cute bag in mind for the jelly roll. Also almost finished Block 10 of the Teacups. Even managed to quilt a quilt on our longarm - under strict supervision. (computer and self not friends)

30's Nine Patch

This is my entry in this weeks Quilting Gallery Contest. http://quiltinggallery.com/2011/09/16/vote-now-nine-patch-quilts/ A quick, simple little quilt turned into a nightmare. It looked ok when finished but took me sooo much longer to make than intended. Can you see the centre 9 patch square is bigger? No one ever notices till I tell them, it was my only option other than remaking dozens of hourglass blocks or unpicking the 9 patch. Wasn't doing either so I went with bigger middles. Wish I had only pressed one or two before I noticed the fabric was shrinking. I think it must have been a poly/cotton mix. In spite of the drama I got over it and it is one of my favourite quilts.

This week I have been putting the final touches to my Garden Party quilt. I still needed to make up a few dresdens to balance out the placement. It's been back on the longarm for the flower quilting. I'm still to sew on the hanging sleeve ready for drop off tomorrow. The MPP Quilt Exhibition is this weekend Sept 2 & 3 at Toorak College, Mt. Eliza. Come along and take a look , there will be lots of quilts on display as well as trade tables and refreshments. Right now I am making up lots of Pin Wheels to add to my French Connection Embroidery quilt which I made up and then pulled apart. I wasn't happy with the way it turned out so I went back to the drawing board. I am using a fast, easy way to make up the pin wheels.( the link is back a few posts if you want to give it a try)

Faded and crackled-Bali Fun in the Sun-Amy Cushion-Stephanie's Kitchen Garden

Here is my 25 year old (I think) Chesterfield I love the worn crackled look the leather has taken on. I replaced or maybe just added to it a fabric sofa some years ago. That has since been recovered and put as a reading spot at the foot of my bed. Then last year when we did the big reno I bought a white leather sofa with a chaise at the end - you know the new must have in sofa design. Still, my favourite spot is the old brown Chesterfield it is always piled with a quilt or two and my current favourite read. Also shown here is my big squashy cushion made from Amy Butler fabric & pattern. This week I'm trying to get Block 7 of the Tea cups finished. Also the baby monkey quilt is pieced and being quilted and tonight I'll be stitching binding. (I hate doing binding I don't get that sense of completion others talk of ! Sometimes just getting the pattern or making one block can work for me.) I didn't use a pattern just a very simple 8" block bordered and sashed.

Okay I just met Harna and chose the baby quilt fabric I'm driving home and Harna calls " Mum you better get that quilt done fast she just had the baby". I know a deadline is a great motivator but gee I still had 3 days till she was due !! I couldn't find the 'right' main fabric but finally we decided on this cute pink monkey one and since Harna works Primates this will be perfect. This is not so much a WIP as a ... I'm not sure what we call this but I gotta go get it made NOW.

It's good to be back home after being on holiday. It is always so nice and comforting to get back into your own bed and there is nothing like making a coffee in your own machine. I have a Nespresso, wish we had taken it with us on our road trip. I did consider it and decided that was silly but next time it is definately coming along. I can't drink cafe coffee as I use lactose free milk so I was resigned to expresso coffee bags with my own milk. Nasty all nasty. Who knew how important a decent cup of coffee could be ! The weather was so gorgeous, sunny and warm every day. Its back to winter here, a scarf and ugg boots the clothing of choice. There are tiny promises of spring around my garden and my first grape hyacinth popped its little blue head up while I was away. Our birds are busy nesting in the aviary so warmer days are close. Haven't done any sewing but I must finish my quilt for the MPP show, I think I have 3 weeks.

I wish I could show the finished jacket but alas it remains as it was when I first showed you. I have not added a single stitch. I have however done another tea cup and almost finished putting together the Verandah Views wall hanging. Just needs a few french knots and the final border sewing on. I have been very busy trying to complete the quilt I want to show at Mornington Peninsula Patchworkers exhibition in September. I still have a lot of stitching to do although the background is quilted and bound I have to add lots of flowers. In between all this I have celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary and a Birthday so it has been pretty busy around here. I haven't posted much but I have been taking a peek at what others are up to. I note that since Esther began Works on Wednesday a few weeks ago that has become my main post. Never mind I am still stitching away as well as cooking lots of winter goodies and enjoying being rugged up - if not in my intendned jacket.

We had to say goodbye to our dear sweet Bruny on Friday. She has been our faithful companion for almost 18 years and although we have two naughty fluffies Bruny was the one with the strongest bond. The one the kids all grew up with, the one always sitting at the door waiting, the one who followed and plonked at our feet. I knew she was fading and it wouldn't be long before I had to make the dreaded decision. The Vet came to our house and so we farewelled our Bruny.
She was a much loved friend and we will all miss her.

Hi everyone, This weeks WIP is a bag I made for my Yoga class. It holds my mat, my pillow, rug,water bottle and support ball. It has a pocket for my keys and phone. The pattern is by Rosalie Quinlan from a few years ago called Oma's project bag. I made the orignal bag for workshops and classes as it will take a cutting mat as well as plenty of fabric. This WIP just made it in time for Yoga this morning I still have to double stitch the tie. I love the fabrics in this especially the waterlily one, its left from a quilt I made last year and works well with my Yoga.

I have kept going this week with my Christmas Mystery Blocks and they are all fininshed- hooray !! Now I need to make the borders, they have a few pieced stars so I have a bit of work to go yet. A while ago I pulled apart my French Collection quilt because it didn't look the way I imagined. I have found some new fabrics and bordered each block again. I have decided to use pinwheels in between the blocks. This will give the quilt a more formal look rather than the scrappy idea I had. I needed 5" blocks and so the search began for a pattern. After much googling and re-sizing I found an even easier way to make them. Take a look. I had to try a few to get my size right but it is such an easy way to make up lots of pinwheels.

This is what I've been sewing today, actually all week. It's a Mystery BOM from Fat Quarter shop. I have been a little, NO ok a lot behind so I got going with it on Monday. My regular Monday friend wasn't around this week so I took the opportunity to catch up and just as well because Block 12 came in the post today. (ouch) Block 5 was holding me back, another friend told me it didn't go together properly. Eventually I put 5 aside and went on to 6. Anyway I did Block 5 on Monday and it went together very smoothly. How silly to be put off without even trying but it always seemed unappealing to begin with pending doom. (lesson learnt) I'm on Block 8 right now. Hope you enjoy WIPs on Wednesday and thank you Esther. xx

(Wow don't know why this post jumped spots all I did was add a title.) Hope you all had a Happy Mother's Day and got a little spoilt. I cooked lunch for all my gang and we had a lovely day I made Greek Butterflied Lamb and also Chicken with lots of oregano and lemon. Crispy roasted potato and sweet potato, green beans with olives and cherry tomatoes. Followed up with Apple Sponge. My gorgeous family all got together and bought me a beautiful necklace. I noticed it ages ago when shopping with Harna, we said it would be a beautiful thing to remember my Mum with. Not that I need a reminder Mum is my angel, I think of her everyday but this is so very special and just the perfect gift.

I have spent a lovely day blogging today. I had a physio treatment this morning which means no sewing so I sat with my friend the heat-pack and a big green tea and set to reading. I began at The Blogger's Quilt Festival where I found hundreds of great quilts and stories. So many talented ladies and interesting reads. I entered last year and will again but I'm yet to decide which quilt to post. Here's the button if you'd like to take a look. (later) Maybe it will be this quilt. I made it for my daughter's Sixteenth Birthday 10 years ago now. I got the pattern from a US quilt magazine, machine pieced with a little needleturn applique. It was made right at the beginning of our long arm quilting business and we did lots and lots of custom work. I still like it today and the quilting still holds up. It has many small pieces and different sized hearts and of course loads of Harna's pink. I asked to borrow it for Valentines Day Show & Tell at my group and she agreed to bring it over - quickly adding " but I need it back". Yes this will be the one :)

Found this pretty wooden box last week,it has linen on the top and a pressed tin heart just perfect for my lovely Valdani threads. These threads are just gorgeous to work with. I got some at the workshop with Sue Spargo last year. Not full yet but I plan to make it so. Next is my latest distraction isn't it just the cutest. I don't have a little head to put it on but I just had to crochet it up .

Mt. Martha Estuary

On the quilting front I've been busy finishing the Lily & Will baby quilt. I have Bali Fun in the Sun on my sofa with its orange polka dot binding,which I just love. Orange was my challenge for 2010. I do like the polka dots but I still find orange a difficult colour to use. I also have some progress on two BOMs First one is from Elefantz and the second from Raspberry Rabbits. ( I have chosen pretty latte n cream fabrics for this one ) That might sound like I only have two BOMs which of course is far from correct I have several others in my pile of projects. I'm behind in the Christmas Mystery one.

Didn't make happy Friday so I'm doing Saturday instead. these are a few things that made me happy this week. First I got most of a baby quilt pieced. Very cute design from Moda Bakehouse in the sweetest Lily&Will greens. Yummy organic raspberries from Red Hill - to go with a flourless chocolate cake. Harna and little Estela back on track after leave and Worldwide news exposure. I've been reading a thread on a quilty site about BOMs. Whilst listing my many on-going and not going yet projects I found this gorgeous BOM from Bears Paw Designs from 2000. It is beautifully presented in a ring binder with brown paper card sheets and it has not even a stitch done. I remember waiting for the post each month and also that it cost a bomb. The dollar was only about 52 cents I think and the post was also a lot but I loved it . I wonder if Bears Paw is still around I must take a look. I really must get this one done. How many more surprises lurk in my cupboards and tubs ....

Cooler nights are back and so its time to knit. Actually here in Melbourne the days have been cold as well so I have had to pull out the cardis. I do love my cardis and its fun to layer up my clothes, so much more interesting than summer time when just a singlet is too hot. I have decided to knit a jacket this year, in one of my favourite neutrals...Like Esther I like to knit from the centre of the skein, it pulls out smoothly never skipping across the room.

I made this quilt for Harna for her Sweet Sixteenth Birthday back in 2000. She will soon be 27. We love hearts around here and of course Harna loves pink so this quilt is a favourite. Though it is much loved and been washed (by me) several times it still looks great . The quilting still looks really good and the batting stable. It is one of the first quilts we custom quilted. I took it for show & tell at MPP on Valentines Day.

Crisp Cool Autumn

It's almost Autumn and already the nights have cooled. I love the crisp coolness of Autumn it is my favourite season and a stunning time of year both here and in my old home State of Tasmania. Tassie has developed a real foodie reputation and I think Autumn would be the best time for a little sampling.. There are so many beautiful, specialist food lines happening down there, many are organic which I love. I have a long list of places to visit. Each time I see an article in a mag or paper or on tv I jot it down for future reference. Little farms with tiny cheeses, old variety apples, truffles, cold climate berries all manner of delicious treats for food minded folk - like me. Here by the beach the shore has finally cleared and all the holiday makers have gone back home. Now I can breathe and walk. Summer is so busy here... lovely Autumn sweeps in and clears the way. Also I love cardis so the weather is perfect to get them out again. I am working this month on a tea cup sampler. I am using a shabby chic theme so I've been burrowing through my stash in search of just the right look for a cup n saucer. It can't be just any old mug from the cupboard it must be the perfect non-matching match for my green tea.

Finally got back to my Christmas Mystery BOM finished Block 6. I haven't done 5 yet as I don't like it too much plus a friend had trouble getting all the points to match. That has held me up so I decided to leave that one for now and move on. I got Block 9 in the post this week. This is how I get UFOs a little stumbling block, something you really don't like and there it is a UFO.

A blog I came upon all about a young family and life in Hobart really took me back today... It was a first day at kinder shot that got my attention. So like Harna's maybe it was the haircut I don't know but I read with great interest looking for all the little pieces of Hobart . I think if blogging were around when I lived there with my two little children it may have looked much the same. I have since been digging out the old photo albums looking at baby photos and all the firsts. We came to live here in Melbourne in 1987 Harna was 3 and Thomas 6 months. My third baby Isaac was born here in Mornington later. Thats coming up 24 years ago not bad for a one or two year transfer. I was a stay at home mum and figured I could do that anywhere so we made the big break from "home" and all our families to head to the big smoke here in Melbourne. I knew no one and my first friends were at the local playgroup. I stiil regularly see two of those girls. We rented in Blackburn for the first 5 years still thinking we would go home. When we couldn't decide we took that as staying and so sold our little house in Hobart and bought here on the Mornington Peninsula. We had to be near the water as the Derwent and ocean had been a large part of our life in Tassie. It became better oportunities for the kids that kept us here long after Philip's work held us. I have often said I'd have never left Tassie if I could go back but then the reason for staying is clear. Harna is a Zookeeper at Melbourne Zoo and Tom will be a Horticulturist at a top Wholesale Nursery. Zac is studying Yr 12 this year who knows where his path will lead. So whilst I miss Tasmania very much and will probably never go back to live our reason for staying is worth it. I will never be able to leave my kids here so my choice was made long ago. My Mum & Dad have both passed away recently so my visits back will be tourist only from here on.( tourist with inside info.) Well thats it for my ramblings its amazing how a single photo of someone elses' little girl can set off a thousand memories. I will get busy and scan all those old photos and put them on a disk some are starting to fade. Just love this little card and I think I know a raspberry lady who might like it too.

Skirt or three

Been doing a lot of blog reading lately and so not much writing. I have been sewing though I have made a skirt, actually two one being an underskirt. I made it in Amy Bulter fabric which I love and the second one in voile, it has two layers so really thats three skirts. I had my lovely neighbour model it but somehow the photos disappeared from my camera so the deck will have to do. I am going to make another one from an old dress it has layered panels so I'll be able to cut around the moth holes. Been thinking of making some stuff and doing a market mmm maybe.

Surprised Harna last week with a visit to the Zoo. It was a stormy overcast day so the usual crowds were less and we enjoyed a wander around . Harna took us down to see Mai and her tiny baby Dewi. Thank you to the guys I know they are really busy and it is such a privelege to go behind scene for a closer look. She is so adorable and Mai the best mum. We also visited the Eles and had a play with little Mali and Ongard they are a real handful and the little bull is making his presence felt. A day at the Zoo always puts things in perspective for me and all the silly day to day grumbles drop away. The big news is Harna passed her trade appraisal on 12th Jan. so she is a Full Trade ZooKeeper now. We are very proud of her and thrilled that her dream came true. Took her 9 years of various endeavours including wildlife caring,volounteering, and much study but so worth the immense effort. WELL DONE HARNA. I find her Gorilla gang a little daunting and always sense their power and wildness when I go into Harna's world. When she opens the gates and they thunder into the dens it is not for the faint hearted ! The Gorillas are a very specialised area and great care must be taken .She does it well.

Last week was back to sewing and slowly I am retrieving my to do packs and thinking which UFOs I will attend to. 2011 is to be my year of finishing. Ha ha I wonder how many I will get to. I can't get my quilts quilted for love perhaps I will have to send them out ! We never get time to do mine, I can't use the machine these days due to my shoulder damage not to mention my dislike of learning the computer system. I took my little stitchery by Willowberry Designs to Mornington Peninsula Patchworkers last week, this is how much I've done so far. Next to that is a sweet little BOM for 2011 from Jennyof Elefantz, I haven't stiched it up yet but I am so looking forward to working on this little wallhanging.

As we watch the devastation unfold on our TV a feeling of helplessness sweeps over us. The enormity of the flooding is beyond comprehension. I have family and friends in Toowoomba, Brisbane and Ipswich also in Mackay though they are all safe the worry and stress is immense for all. In our own small way we can help- the girls at Gumtree have set up this appeal and I'm sure there will be many more ways to contribute in the near future. Thank you for the many emails I have received from overseas friends your prayers and best wishes are profound to those affected. Even Melbourne is expecting some flooding today as the rain and flow on effect continues across our country. Late last night a tiny little orang was born . Harna was lucky enough to view the birth -amazing - it is the sweetest little creature. What a joy to be able to have these little babies born here in Melbourne . Lets hope we can in some small way help them to survive in the wild. Everything we learn makes a difference. The bunny quilt is growing I'm working on Block 2 . It's typical of my patchworking story never have the right fabric.. in this case I find pink is not pink. I have plenty of pink as I have used it in many quilts but still I need another shade. I thought I'd use stash only for this one but not to be, much of it is reproduction or too coral or too whatever so a little shopping is required.

Look at this pretty wrapped gift for my friend Carol's Birthday. My local gift shop does a beautiful job, it looks so nice even before you open it. It holds an even prettier pink peony rose tea cup and a gorgeously Scented soap. The posy of roses is picked from my back garden.

Rabbits Prefer Chocolate

I haven't been sewing much these past weeks. Trying to rest my hands so I can do some applique. I ordered two patterns both I want to needleturn. I have started getting the fabrics together and cutting the freezer paper for the cutest bunny quilt, Rabbits Prefer Chocolate by Bunny Hill Designs. Mine will be white chocolate as I return to pastels .Most of my quilts this year have been done in very bright fabrics. I have finished all the piecing on Esthers In the Pink, slow I know. I have been filling in with a little stitchery called Verandah Views.

BLOGGER'S QUILT FESTIVAL

Hello quilter friends, this is the quilt I chose for my entry into The Blogger's Quilt Festival.
I made it a couple of years ago now but it remains my favourite. I designed it for my Mum & Dads 50th Wedding Anniversay. I wanted to use needleturn applique and piecing. It began with the search for the feature fabric which I used for the borders and some of the applique. I pieced up the nine patch stars by machine using several yellow prints, then needleturned the applique. I chose the colours from the border print using the yellows to represent the Golden Anniversary. My husband and I quilted it on our longarm using lots of pretty quilting and ditching. Sadly Dad never got to see the finished quilt but Mum loved it. Though she passed away just about two years ago now she was thrilled to receive it from my hand. This makes the quilt even more precious to me as it was the last one I made for her. She always loved and supported my work. I'm happy to share it here with you.

Take a look at the beautiful Sampler Lizzie has made up it is truly gorgeous, though the blocks came from many hands using many techniques. It is of every colour and design yet it all works perfectly. What love surrounds this lovely lady I'm sure it will bring her much joy and happiness. To have a friend such as Lizzie...and now many more what a blessing.

Pink Frothy

Block 4 BOM

A little bit of progress. Here is my Pink Frothy from Kaffe Fassetts book Quilt Romance all quilted in a big flower design ( obvious choice). Block 4 of Christmas Mystery BOM. And this week I did a little work on Violets back in the light now the French Collection is finished. I added some ribbon work and have it ready to embroider the verse. I also added borders to the French Coll. I decided to very much simplify the quilt design after spending so much time embroidering. It's really not at all like I envisaged it at the begining but the stitching and buttons do the talking! If you've been over on Esther's blog you'll know its been all about her birthday cakes and of course her Christmas 6 week BOW. It got me thinking about family recipes and as I now have all Mums I looked out our Black Forest Birthday Cake. She always made it for us growing up all filled with black cherries and chocolate, delish I'm going to make it soon I think.

Who says he has no dress sense? Just look at this fine co-ordination perfectly matched to the quilt he is quilting. I really like the pastel pink thongs. Such attention to detail must be commended even if random. I'm guessing the Tshirt must have been on top of the pile and the thongs would be mine - the only ones at the door !

This is little Lily she is only white and pretty like this on day one of grooming. Lily loves to dig and is always muddy. I have found this little lady with only her tail poking out of a freshly dug hole - not sure where she is trying to go but she doesn't give up. Her mate Oscar never digs . My favourite block CAFE

I'm lost without my stitchery to work on. It has been my constant project for so long I don't seem to have anything else anywhere near ready to do in the applique department. I have sifted through projects awaiting my attention but none enthuse me. Sooooh I have started another stitchery. It is called Verandah Views by Willowberry Designs. A small project by my measure. I had the background (a pale green damask) put away with a few threads so it will keep me going until I get the applique sorted. My Leaf Play wool embroidery is going along nicely I have managed to add a few new stitches. I am back working on Esther's In The Pink just a bit of piecing to go and then to begin all that applique. Also working on a crochet afghan (thats down to Esther as well) having a bit of trouble getting my school girl crochet up to scratch but I have a few hexagons done. Finished sewing up my mohair jumper. Thought of Mum as I stitched she always sewed them for me and often had to finish knitting the sleeves too as I'd be sick of it by then. I always knit the sleeves together to avoid a one arm garment. (True to form I don't like the colour now) I have that uneasy feeling of now being at the top of the tree - others seek help where I once sought it. Not a place I'm happy or comfortable to be in .

Finished Block 3 2010 Christmas Mystery and Block 1 2009 Mystery. Keeping up so far which is unusual for me . ( Well okay I just got the post and no. 4 has arrived so I just made it in time!! ) I know it says 2009 but it is new to me. I got it as a complete kit recently. I'm loving the fabrics and I'm not missing the fabric choice bit of patchworking as I thought I would. I really like these ranges. I'm not a fan of Christmas so a Christmas quilt is a bit of a surprise for me but so far its going well.

French Collection

I finished stitching The French Collection embroidery at Di's on Monday. I've been working on it for about 18 months. Di and I began it together and set a day a month to work on it. She finished hers over summer whilst I was lost in sawdust and plaster ! I am cutting strips and framing the blocks now. All my other handwork has been on hold this year (dear jane, sally post, love letters etc.) to push on with this one so I am pretty sick of it. I am looking forward to sewing on all the little buttons though - they are a delight all handmade by Robyn Allen Waters of Maleny QLD. Block 3 Christmas Mystery 2010 done. Block 1 of Mystery Quilt 2009 - (Fat Quarter Shop) done. Harna came over for Philip's Birthday dinner last night. Complaining about my mess she was, whatever could she mean ! Every available surface was covered in strips and blocks when she arrived but the dinner was happily cooking in the oven. She asked when we last ate at the dining room table - I told her 1998. Lucas couldn't be here, he is on Elephant watch and the new baby is on the way. We were getting updates during the evening of Kulab's progress . I had a play with Mali last weekend she is the cheekiest little thing, fearless and afraid all at once. She loves dates !... and sand and rocks.

Made this little button at the workshop. I chose an owl as we have Tawnys nesting in our back garden. Last season they produced two chicks, unfortunately the larger one pushed the other out of the nest. Guess who picked it up and hand raised it. It now resides at Healseville. Named Rafael .

my Leaf Play

I had a fantastic two days at Amitie with Sue Spargo. Her handwork is truly incredible, she had many of her pieces with her and we were in awe of their beauty. It was so wonderful to be able to see her work up close and marvel at the detail. She was very generous with her knowledge and I think a fabulous time was had by all. I have the know how but oh to perfect the skill ! I hope the stitches I learnt will manifest on my leaves and not stay hidden in my head. Thank you to Sue hope you'll come back again and to Jenny and her girls for a fantastic workshop.

Block 1,2

I haven't had time to write or catch up on my blogs as I've been sewing on the 56 Leaves. Yes 56 as prep for my up coming Sue Spargo Workshop this Friday and Sat. I'm so excited to meet Sue and see all her work close -up. I still have 6 to applique I've had to space them out at 5 or 6 a day as I have tendonitis in my sewing hand. Of course it's my thumb and first finger acting up ! Can't imagine how this has happened.. Anyway I'm very much looking forward to my two day embellishing class. I have finished my Bali Fun in the Sun and Block 2 of the Mystery Christmas Quilt. I have also finished piecing the large circle for Cultural Blend - mine is not cultural but more natural . I have still to applique it to the background but it will have to wait till my hand works again. Lucky I have plenty to do on the machine. Think I have a UFO that needs less than 56 leaves but who can resist !!

Tea cup

Found this pretty Green tea cup especially for my Green tea. It's sitting on a new quilt I am working on . Started it on the machine last week using a long wedge ruler - it's a large pieced circle. Pattern from Material Obsession. It went together beautifully and quick too. Just have to applique the centre and put the whole thing onto a big square background - more applique - quite a lot actually ! I really should be doing my leaves ready for the Sue Spargo workshop.

So excited to be doing a two day embellishing workshop with Sue Spargo in Melbourne. I'm really enjoying working with the wool. I'm on Block 2 of Ginger Grove I've only done the applique so the timing is perfect to learn all the overlay work. The homework is many many leaves to be appliqued to background ready for class. I havent stitched them yet but am happy with the placement...today anyway !
